Home for the Holidays? Tips on Covering Up that Tattoo!

December 17, 2018 in Laser Treatments

There are many reasons as to why people get tattoos. Whatever the reason, there are times when some people may want to cover up their tattoos if they are around family or friends that may judge them. Now with increased technology, there are many different options to cover up a tattoo. It can either be done with a procedure or with a simple cover-up tactic such as makeup. Here are some tips you can use to cover up a tattoo:

Laser Treatment:

Laser tattoo removal is the only clinically proven method of removing a tattoo without causing any scarring. This treatment uses ultra-short pulses of light energy to remove the ink in a tattoo. The laser light is applied to the tattooed area of the skin. The light is absorbed by the tattoo ink particles, leaving the surrounding skin tissue and chromosomes unharmed. The tattoo ink particles absorb the laser energy, heat up, and shatter into smaller ink particles. In a couple of days following laser treatment, the body’s immune system flushes away the ink particles, causing the tattoo to fade. Over a series of treatments, it will eventually be gone completely. At Agave Laser and Aesthetic Clinic in San Antonio, we offer a variety of different laser treatments. The procedures include body sculpting, hair removal, skin tightening, and much more!

Create A Cover-Up Tattoo

More people are choosing to get cover-up tattoos because of the consistency and quality that cover-up tattoos have to offer. A cover-up tattoo can be done over an existing tattoo of any size, design, and color. Certain designs and colors can sometimes be more challenging to cover up. However, a skilled tattoo artist can cover-up almost any tattoo and leave you with a newly designed tattoo that you will want to show off and not hide from anyone. The tattoo artist will have to combine a set of skills that includes blending color, shading, detailing, and depth of color to produce a cover-up tattoo. For it to quickly work, it first depends on the color of the original tattoo. The lighter the colors are and the softer the application of ink is, the more options you have when it comes to designing the cover-up tattoo. Darker tattoos with heavy use of ink are harder to cover up. Secondly, it depends on the age of the original tattoo. If it is old and faded, it will be easier to cover up with a new one. Third, the design of the tattoo with minimal coloration, no outlines, and gradated color covering a small surface area are the easiest to cover up. Remember to find a good tattoo artist that will go over the design with you and make sure you will get the outcome you want.

Using Makeup

This technique is the quickest and easiest to do. All you have to do is find a foundation that will match your skin tone. To begin, you’ll first want to cleanse the area you are covering up- in this case where ever the tattoo is. Keep in mind you should not attempt to cover up a tattoo unless it is fully healed or else you can develop an infection or ruin the ink. On average, tattoos take as long as 45 days to heal completely. You then want to apply a light concealer that is several shades lighter than your natural skin tone. To apply, use a makeup sponge or brush to apply the concealer to the tattoo. Try to dab or blot the concealer onto the skin instead of rubbing it. If you rub it, it will push the product around the tattoo rather than adding the wanted coverage. Lastly, you want to apply the foundation. It’s important to remember to choose a shade that matches your skin tone perfectly. Spray foundations are the easiest to work with and provide the most even coverage, but liquid or cream foundations will also work. You can use a sponge or makeup brush to apply and remember to use the same blotting technique to get the most coverage.
