Have you ever dreamt of not having to shave again? Who wouldn’t want to throw away their razor for good! Luckily there is laser hair removal to solve all your unwanted hair issues. We have come up with the answers to the top questions about laser hair removal.

Is it permanent?

Laser hair removal is a permanent hair reduction, not permeant removal. You will see a massive decrease in hair, but it is not uncommon for patients to have maintenance treatments once a year even after the area has been adequately treated. This is because the laser targets and destroys your current hair follicles, but that doesn’t stop new follicles from developing due to hormonal changes or shifts in weight.

What are the risks?

Possible laser hair removal risks/side effects include:

  • Slight redness of the skin
  • Mild swelling of hair follicles
  • Pigment changes could occur, especially in those with darker skin
  • Temporary irritation resulting in blistering, crusting or scarring

Does it hurt?

The procedure does hurt – but not a lot. Patients have described it like a rubber band snapping against your skin. It only stings for a millisecond. While the area where you received the treatment may be red and puffy, you shouldn’t feel any pain after the procedure.

Does it work on all skin types and hair colors?

Laser hair removal will work on nearly any skin type – from very light-skinned people to extremely dark-skinned people. Lighter-colored hair can be more challenging to treat, but your technician should use the appropriate light beam depending on the color of your hair.

How long does it take?

The procedure time depends on the size of the area being treated. Every hair follicle is zapped in a millisecond, which means that a small area, for example, your armpit, would take less than five minutes to complete. A larger area such as your legs could take a half an hour.

Where should I remove hair?

The one place where you should not remove hair is around your eyes – eyebrows, upper cheeks, and temples. Those areas will need to be tweezed and waxed for the rest of your life due to the risk of eye damage from the laser. All other areas can be treated with laser hair removal.
